Carl Moll

(Austrian, 1861–1945)

Carl Moll was a well-known Austrian painter closely associated with the Art Nouveau movement. Taking inspiration from the French Neo-Impressionists, he became a founding member of the Vienna Secession along with other prominent Austrian artists, including famed painter Gustav Klimt. Motivated by a disassociation from the historicist conservative style of painting favored at the time, Moll’s work favored bright green open spaces and landscapes rendered with fresh, airy brushstrokes in a style akin to Pointillism, with other subjects ranging from interior spaces, portraits, and still lifes. Born on April 23, 1861 in Vienna, Austria, the artist sadly never received the accolades of his peers, and committed suicide in Vienna at the end of the Second World War on April 13, 1945.
