This pirate adventure is stunning in more ways than one - an exciting story backed by terrific graphics, it references an area of history all too often neglected by popular novels and films. The pirates of the 18th century were not simply the scourge of the high seas, men driven by a lust for gold: they were also the precursors of modern democracy, seeking freedom, equality and the collective sharing of wealth.
Ronan Toulhoat is without question one of the most talented illustrators of his generation. He is as comfortable working in black and white as he is in colour, and adept enough to keep a conversation going with the history of art while never losing sight of his own unique approach.
