Agus Suwage
(Indonesian, born 1959)
Biography
Agus Suwage is a contemporary Indonesian artist known for his self-representation in painting, sculpture, and installation. He uses his self-portraiture to probe questions about society, culture, religion, and man’s relationship to animals in critical yet humorous ways. There exists a convenience for the artist when using his own likeness in a work, Suwage has explained, noting that “self-portraits are ‘the easiest’ because the model is ready anytime the artist requires him to be.” Born on April 14, 1959 in Purworejo, Central Java, Indonesia, he focused on graphic design at Bandung’s Institute of Technology, but decided to pursue a career as a fine artist after his studies in the 1980s. Currently living and working in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, the artist’s retrospective “Still Crazy After All These Years” at the Jogja National Museum was a comprehensive look at Suwage’s oeuvre on the occasion of his 50th birthday in 2009.
