Edward Everard Arnold was born in Heilbronn, near Stuttgart circa 1816, and in 1846 was one of many Germans to emigrate to the United States, arriving in the Southern port of New Orleans. He worked in watercolours as well as oils and specialised in ship portraits and battle scenes. In 1860 he visited Havana in Cuba, returning in 1863 to New Orleans, where he died on 14th October, 1866.

His work is represented in the collections of the Smithsonian Institute, Washington D.C., the Louisiana State Museum, the Mariners Museum in Newport News, Virginia, and the Museo Maritimo in Barcelona.
