Biography

Timeline

1936
Born in Kohama, Sumiyoshi-ku, Osaka, the second son and fifth child of seven born to father Takayoshi and mother Shizu
1942
Enters Osaka Municipal Kohama Elementary School
1945
Is among those evacuated en masse to a temple in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture
1946
Returns home. Around this time, develops an interest in modern art after being shown photos
1949
Enters Osaka Municipal Sumiyoshi Junior High School No. 1
1952
Begins studying drafting at Kogei Senior High School, Osaka, a vocational school of the arts. Belongs to the school's Modern Art Club, and as a third-year student, produces work using rough burlap cloth.
1955
Graduates from Kogei Senior High School, and begins working at Sharp Hayakawa Electrics Co., Ltd. (forerunner of Sharp Corporation).
1956
Goes to work in the public relations department of the Daiei film studio
1957
Around this time, meets Gutai group members Shozo Shimamoto, Yasuo Sumi, and Chiyu Uemae at a modern art exhibition
1959
Meets Jiro Yoshihara for the first time at the 8th Gutai Art Exhibition
