Biography

Timeline

1908
Born in Chanteloup-en-Brie, France
1927 - 1928
Studied painting under Cubist painter and sculptor André Lhote at the Lhote Academy in Paris, France
1931
Spent one year in the Ivory Coast, where he took his first photographs
Traveled throughout Europe with Andre Pieyre de Mandiargues and Leonor Fini
1932
Studied Cinematography with Paul Strand, New York, USA
Discovered the Leica, his camera of choice thereafter
1936 - 1939
Worked as a production assistant for Jean Renoir in Paris, France
1940
Captured by the Nazis while fighting in the French Army
1943
Escaped from prison on his third attempt and subsequently joined an underground organization to assist prisoners and escapees
Began taking portraits of artists and writers for Editions Braun, including Henri Matisse, Pierre Bonnard, Georges Braque and Camille Claudel
1944 - 1945
Joined a group of professional photographers in order to document the liberation of Paris
Finished Le Retour (The Return), a documentary film about returning captives and deportees
