Edward Charles Barnes was a talented 19th century London painter of genre scenes with people and domestic interiors, however his paintings of children are where he became most famous.
Barnes exhibited 66 times at the three most prestigious galleries in London during the 19th century. From 1855 through 1882 he had 10 showings at the Royal Academy, 17 showings at the British Institute, and 38 showings at the Suffolk Street Galleries, the London home for the Royal Society of British Artists.
Barnes' work also consisted of larger Frith-type scenes of Victorian life. He also painted some Spanish subjects in the manner of John Phillips and J. B. Burgess.
