"I try to represent anxious memories, to represent that moment when we realise the impermanence of everything. I represent landscapes... seconds before being chased out of paradise."

Marcella Barceló (b. 1992, Mallorca) frequently travelled to Japan and was introduced to 'Mono No' aware, an aesthetic concept derived from Japanese Buddhist philosophy. It deals with the elusive nature of the sensible world, the description and resigned contemplation of what is lost. A disturbing metaphorical strangeness emerges from Marcella Barceló’s canvases, crossed by the recurring figures of ghostly adolescents - hesitating between wonder and anguish. "I try to represent anxious memories, to represent that moment when we realise the impermanence of everything. I represent landscapes where there seems to be a potential threat, a slight trembling, a few seconds before being chased out of paradise."
