David Krut Projects (DKP) is a project space exhibiting global artists with a focus on South African art and editioned works. Active in Johannesburg and New York City, DKP is dedicated to providing a platform for collaborative vision and awareness of / careers in the arts.
In the early 1990s, print edition projects were initiated with artists, Avhashoni Mainganye, Willem Boshoff, and William Kentridge. In 1996 Krut produced a pioneering CD-ROM on William Kentridge, which initiated David Krut Publishing activities in South Africa. The TAXI Art Book series, produced in 2000, with funding from the French and Dutch governments and Pro Helvetia of Switzerland, created a platform for written South African art history.
The gallery in Chelsea was established in 2001 with an attached etching studio, and initiated important exhibitions on artists from Africa. These included the first of El Anatsui’s work, in association with October Gallery (London), and an exhibition of work by Santu Mofokeng. There have been regular exhibitions each year representing the African Diaspora, such as Christopher Cozier (Trinidad), Nnenna Okore (Nigeria), Cedric Nunn (South Africa), and New York-based Chakaia Booker. We are delighted to have recently begun representing the work of Aida Muluneh - the renowned photographer from Ethiopia, and the founder of the Addis Foto Fest.
The Johannesburg base, created in 2002, has since expanded to comprise galleries, bookstores, and the David Krut Print Workshop (DKW) – a central component of the organization. David Krut Projects has become a launch pad for many of Africa’s leading artists and writers through fostering their early careers.
Recent editions from DKW include work by young artists such as Senzo Shabangu and Mongezi Ncaphayi together with artists like William Kentridge, Diane Victor, and Stephen Hobbs. The 2014 residents programme includes Godfried Donkor, Endale Desalegne Chimisso (Ethiopia), and Wycliffe Mundopa (Zimbabwe).
