BALTIMORE, MD - C. Grimaldis Gallery is pleased to present A Sculpture Show, an exhibition featuring Anthony Caro, Jon Isherwood, Jae Ko, Jane Manus, and John Ruppert; five artists presenting an innovative approach to material gesture. With an emphasis on form and process, this exhibition celebrates the breath of work produced by some of our longest standing represented sculptors.
The late Anthony Caro began his career in steel sculpture in 1960, exploring and expanding the boundaries of pure abstraction. This exhibition includes two of the artist's Table Pieces, a series which dominated his practice in the mid-1970s and beyond, showcasing an improvisational approach to metalwork which highlights the interplay between sculpture and table. These works energize the relationship between surface and object, reflecting on bodily response to gravity. Jon Isherwood is invested in developing a language around the associative sensations of imagery and shape. His recent series of marble flowers first exhibited along Broadway in New York City transpose once fragile forms into solid stone to emphasize ephemerality. As an apprentice of Caro, Isherwood's move to marble as material signifies a captivating reductive process, similarly performative but inverse of his mentor.
Jae Ko's manipulation of her chosen medium, paper, becomes a personified voice in the artist's sculptural work. The tension built through binding, gluing, and submerging these works transforms the paper into forms connected to the force of nature. In a parallel dialogue, John Ruppert juxtaposes material and man-made forms to investigate human intervention, providing the viewer with a balance between earth's creativity and man's effort to celebrate the naturally sublime. His castings presented in the exhibition focus on a grounding in space, a solidity which brings calm attention to textured surfaces. Jane Manus's abstract sculptures punctuate the gallery space with brightly colored surfaces and bold forms. Her works in welded and painted aluminum push scale in a way that is at once industrial and organic, exploring balance, symmetry, and geometry.
